On Saturday, November 13th, members of Troop 113 went to Cornwall, NY for an Orienteering “beginners meet” sponsored by Hudson Valley Orienteering Club. The meet was designed to introduce the sport of orienteering to Scouts, families and anyone interested in spending time outdoors.
We learned how to orient a map to magnetic North and how to interpret various map symbols. A session on safety provided good tips about footwear, avoiding poisonous plants and what to do if we would become lost.
During the meet various teams competed to complete the trail in the shortest time possible while finding all of the control markers.
Following the meet we enjoyed our lunches at the Hudson Valley Nature Museum’s farm, and then we went to Stewart, NY to visit the Orange County Choppers showroom. Orange County Choppers designs and manufactures specialty motorcycles in varied “themes” that honor sports teams, emergency service providers or other specialty causes. Among the theme bikes we saw a space shuttle bike, a police bike with side car and a three-wheeled motorcycle designed to enable a person in a wheelchair to operate the bike.
Our next troop meeting is Monday evening, November 22nd from 7 PM to 9 PM in the Adult Lounge at First Baptist Church of Hackensack.
