Getting ready for a Court of Honor (COH) and Summer Camp in one evening is a daunting task, but we tackled it last night!
We awarded several rank patches in advance of the COH so that scouts could put them on their uniforms now. One Scout Badge, Three Tenderfoot, One First Class and One Star!
We practiced our agenda for our troop’s first-ever COH and made a lot of revisions to keep things simple and manageable. We’ll be working on script sheets for each of the scouts who will be participating and have yet to assemble some of the props we’re planning on using. However, everyone is looking forward to next Monday’s ceremony.
The other half of the meeting was devoted to a “paperwork blizzard” to help get everyone ready for a week at summer camp. There are medical forms, early release forms and all sorts of forms needed to document the essentials prior to arriving at camp. At least we’ve already gotten the swim classifications out of the way!
At camp, our first year scouts will largely participate in a special program called the “Dan Beard” program — designed to help them complete most of their skill assignments for Tenderfoot, Second Class and First Class. They’ll also be able to complete Swimming Merit Badge and have options to complete either Nature or Leatherwork MB. It’s a good program and they’ll learn a ton of good stuff there.
Other scouts will be working on Geocaching, Fish&Wildlife, Citizenship in the Nation, Lifesaving and many more merit badges.
Of course, we’ll also have time for inter-troop competitions, swimming in the creek at Fossil Rock or Little Falls, etc.
We concluded the meeting with a devotional that continues our series on examining the Scout Oath — “I will do my best…”
