Reminders…

Troop 113 Families:

  1. Please remember that tonight is our PINEWOOD DERBY.  Please bring your cars even if they’re not 100% finished — better to race a “not quite perfect” car than to skip the race (even if it’s mainly a square-ish block of wood with wheels, come have fun!)
  2. Parents, now is the time to get out your checkbook for SUMMER CAMP FEES.  The deadline is next week, but we can accept your fees now, too.  I’ve previously emailed each family with the cost AND their available credit (if any) toward camp fees.  If you have any questions please let me know!

NEXT WEEK’s MEETING (4/16/2012):

…will be a swim test held at the YMCA in Hackensack (360 Main Street  Hackensack, NJ 07601 — (201) 487-6600).   This test is for ADVANCEMENT PURPOSES ONLY (if your scout has not passed his “beginner” or “swimmer” test) — this is NOT for summer camp — all scouts will re-test AT camp when we arrive.

PLEASE plan on arriving at the Y by 6PM — our pool time is very limited (6:30 to 7:30 PM SHARP):

  • COST per swimmer = $5
  • Anyone that’s heading into the pool must shower at the Y prior to entering the pool area.
  • If your scout normally uses swim goggles, please remember to bring them!!!!
  • No running in pool area, no horseplay.  The surfaces around the pool can be slippery.

What is the BSA Swim Test?

Swimmer

  • Jump feet first into water over the head, level off, and begin swimming.
  • Swim 75 yards in a strong manner using one or more of the following strokes: side, breast, trudgen, or crawl. Swim 25 yards using an easy, resting backstroke.
  • The 100 yards must be completed without stops and must include at least one sharp turn.
  • Rest by floating…Long enough to demonstrate ability to rest when exhausted.

Beginner

  • Jump feet first into water over the head, level off, and begin swimming.
  • Swim 25 feet on the surface.
  • Stop, turn, and resume swimming back to the starting place.

Non-Swimmer

  • Did not complete either of the swimming tests.

If your scout has already passed his full “Swimmer Test” then he doesn’t need to participate at the Y, and we’ll see him at the next troop meeting on April 23rd (No Meeting At FBC on the 16th)

April 23rd meeting:

…we will continue to work on Communications Merit Badge.  Scouts who’ve not completed a five minute speech should be working on that AND any other uncompleted requirements (i.e. write a letter to an editor, prepare and deliver a persuasive presentation selling a concept or product/service OR prepare an autobiographical presentation using visual aids or other supporting prop, et.al.)  More details will be sent to families by Email!

Remember, Communications is required for Eagle Scout, and it’s a helpful skill to practice/master.  Getting it done now helps your scout advance prior to summer camp and lets him have more fun at camp for electives such as climbing, sailing, shooting sports, etc.
